My Story

We are located on a small hill where the wind seems windier on windy days at one of the highest location in Noble County Indiana, which inspires the flower farm name,” Windy Hill Flower Farm”.    living in a farming area traditionally neighbors have a back yard garden which generally includes some zinnias and sunflowers. In 2022 Windy Hill Flower Farm entered the flower farming business selling at local farmers markets, area florists and to bouquet customers.

Hello friends, I am Sherl Klopfenstein the owner and CEO of WHFF. My husband is Mike Klopfenstein, who is the master builder of any agricultural related structures, my biggest fan and business advisor.

My journey into flower farming began twelve years ago, springtime 2012, when our oldest daughter, Hannah was making plans for her fall wedding. As a vegetable gardener for over thirty years, I thought it would be an easy task to do, grow your own flowers for a wedding, easy right? As the seed catalogs came in the mail the list of flowers grew, I don’t remember all the different flowers, but I do remember Lisianthus, Zinnias, Baby’s Breath and Sunflowers.   At that time, I thought a seed was a seed, you plant it in the ground and in time, with the right conditions, soil, moisture and sunlight, it will grow.  After multiple attempts and expense, the Lisianthus was a failure. I remember this flower because it looked very much like a rose and did not have thorns and was available in colors she chose. The Zinnias and Sunflowers were a success and we ended up using them in the table centerpieces on the wedding cake. Every year after the wedding experiment, if I had a garden, I would incorporate a lot of flowers in my veggie garden…  Cosmos, Sunflowers, Zinnias, Snap Dragons, Gladiolas and more.

November 2018, my husband and I took a two-week tour to the Nation of Israel with Wisdom in Torah Ministries.  Every day was packed with educational lectures and beautiful sites of biblical history throughout the country. On Wednesday, November 27, we spent the entire day within the Ancient City of Jerusalem, touring the Museum of Biblical History, a museum that holds the Dead Sea Scrolls, shopping at the shook and to the eastern Wall.

The Eastern Wall is a designated place to go for prayer with a group, individual, with prayer books and some hand write their prayers and put them in crevices or holes in the ancient stone wall. Our teacher and guide, Rico Cortez, taught us that before approaching the wall we should honor our Great King and the Jewish people. Washing our hands at the hand washing basin for everyone, and to be sure we all cover our heads.  After our hands were washed, we entered our designated area, a men’s section and a women’s section.   Within the women’s area, some were sitting alone, some were in groups praying from their prayer siddurs in Hebrew and welcoming strangers to join them. Some people were at the wall with their verbal prayers and written prayers. I sat for a while to write my prayers for each one of our children, on a piece of paper. Once I was done, I slowly walked to the wall with my written prayers folded up very tightly and tucked the paper wherever I could find a small little hole. Once it was safely tucked in, I stood along aside others with my hand on the very tall stone wall and began praying to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and the God who sent His Son to this earth to die for me and you and just simply prayed for His will in my life and giving thanks for so many blessings. With my eyes closed, I felt something on my hand, I quickly opened my eyes and there on my hand was a small, leafy branch from the plants that grow randomly on the wall.  I believe this was an immediate answer to my prayer. Plants, living organisms that grow from seeds, tubers, bulbs, and corms. That His will for my life is to grow plants that will impact people and display His wondrous work of creation and His Majesty.
